What Is World Migratory Bird Day?
World Migratory Bird Day is a global awareness campaign about migratory birds, their habitats and conservation along migration routes. Because birds travel across countries and continents, their protection depends on cooperation and healthy ecosystems in many places.
2026 Theme Explained
The theme highlights how bird observations can contribute to conservation. Sightings and other observations can help researchers understand migration patterns, population trends and threats. The 2026 campaign also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the International Waterbird Census and recognises decades of volunteer-based monitoring.
Why Migratory Birds Matter
Migratory birds connect wetlands, forests, grasslands, coastlines and other habitats. They are part of functioning ecosystems, and protecting the places they depend on can also benefit many other species.
Major Threats
- Habitat loss and degradation.
- Pollution and plastic waste.
- Disturbance at feeding and resting sites.
- Climate-related changes.
- Illegal hunting or trapping in some regions.
- Collisions and other human-made hazards.
How to Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day
- Go birdwatching responsibly in a suitable local area.
- Record observations using a trusted bird-monitoring platform.
- Learn to identify common local birds.
- Keep water sources and natural areas clean.
- Protect native vegetation where appropriate.
- Teach children why habitats and wetlands matter.
- Share verified conservation information.
Birdwatching Tips for Beginners
Choose a quiet location and observe without chasing birds. Notice size, shape, colours, calls and behaviour. Binoculars are useful but not essential. Never disturb nests, handle wild birds or approach wildlife only for a photograph.
World Migratory Bird Day Messages

“Protect habitats today so migratory birds can complete their journeys tomorrow.”
“Look up, observe with care and help nature be heard.”
